My Faves for Friday, November 30, 2007

This is a nice free online tool, for when you need to print a fancy formatted graphical Word document but don't have Word installed. I had a doc that was getting totally mangled by OpenOffice, hardly displayed at all in WordPad, but came out perfectly using this thing.

My Faves for Monday, November 26, 2007

i just found this tool. while you're browsing, submitting forms, whatever, it lets you view and edit the http headers and data you're sending. it's useful if you need to analyze/debug https stuff, where a sniffer won't help.

My Faves for Sunday, November 11, 2007

this is a good explanation. i finally understand it! the part quoted here is what i had been missing.

Quoted: Each point of the sail has different pressures working on it. The strongest force is at chord depth, where the curve of the sail is the deepest. This is where air flows fastest and pressure drops most. Force weakens as it moves to the rear and separates. The direction of these forces changes also. At every point in the sail the force is perpendicular to the sail's surface. The strong forces in the forward part of the sail are also in the most forward direction. In the middle of the sail the force changes to a sideways, or heeling, direction. In the rear part of the sail the force grows still weaker as wind speed decreases, and causes backward or drag direction.

A column by Ben Stein about diagnosing the American auto industry. I was having this argument with somebody a couple days ago. He was repeating the official line about how the Big Three are failing because of health and pension costs. Stein says that's a mound of b.s. Is it the price that keeps people from buying G.M./Ford/Chrysler? No, it's the quality of the cars.

Quoted: It’s not the workers’ fault, even though they will be blamed for it because they are the punching bag at this point. It’s management’s fault. Time to put the bean counters out to pasture and to install people who will design and make cars that dreams are made of. It’s not too late.

my grandpa used to talk about how, in the army during ww2, they ran out of fuel and got their vehicles to run on wood. i always wondered if this could possibly be true or if he was having 'creative' reminiscences...

Quoted: Construction of a Simplified Wood Gas Generator for Fueling Internal Combustion Engines in a Petroleum emergency

we were musing about how silencers work.

Quoted: Most suppressors work by allowing the pressurized gases in the barrel to slowly expand before they exit the muzzle of the firearm, resulting in significantly less noise as the gases rush out slowly. The process is comparable to slowly opening a soda can and hearing a hissing sound rather than a "pop". Some suppressors are also structured like motorcycle mufflers for the sound waves to cancel as they reflect from the sides of the casing. Such suppressors are inherently more difficult to design and to manufacture since they require more precise cutting and assembly. For this reason, they are often bigger and are mounted on large-caliber rifles where the added sound suppression is needed most.

Quoted: Motion pictures have produced the common misconception that sound suppressors ("silencers") completely silence the weapon's sound, or reduce it to a quiet whistling sound, which is in most cases very far from the truth. In fact, the emergent noise can still be heard from a fairly great distance. The quiet whistling sound associated with silencers is more attributable to the noise made by air guns.

Quoted: "These steep and serene blue roofs, which arc to the heavens, in truth house corrupt souls who once sought succor in a simple pancake, but have now succumbed to the temptation of caramel cheesecakes and Caesar salads," Lyman wrote.
